When presenting and recording a webinar at your desk, it’s critical that the final video looks and sounds professional. Read tips from Justin Mashuta, an experienced videographer with Shuta Productions, on ways to prep for a polished virtual presentation.
Camera Tips:
- Position the Camera at Eye Level:
Place the camera at eye level or slightly above to create a more natural and flattering angle. - Frame Yourself Properly:
Position yourself so your head and shoulders are visible, with some space above your head and not too much empty space around you. - Stabilize the Camera:
Use a tripod or a stable surface to avoid a shaky camera. - Check Your Background:
Ensure the background is clean and uncluttered. A simple, professional backdrop is ideal.
Lighting Tips:
- Use Natural Light When Possible:
Position yourself facing a window to use natural light, but avoid direct sunlight that can create harsh shadows. - Add Artificial Lighting:
If natural light is insufficient, use soft, diffused lighting. A ring light or a softbox light can be very effective. Place the light source in front of you, slightly above eye level. - Avoid Backlighting:
Make sure there is no strong light source behind you, as this can create a silhouette effect. - Balance the Light:
Use additional light sources to balance the lighting if one side of your face is in shadow. You can use desk lamps with soft white bulbs.
What to Wear:
- Solid Colors:
Choose solid, neutral, or muted colors. Avoid bright white or very dark black, as these can cause exposure issues on camera. - Avoid Patterns:
Stay away from busy patterns, stripes, or checks, as they can cause a moiré effect and be distracting. - Simple Accessories:
Keep jewelry and accessories minimal to avoid noise and distractions. - Comfortable but Professional:
Wear something that looks professional but is also comfortable, as you may be sitting for an extended period. - Consider the Background:
Make sure your clothing contrasts well with your background. Avoid colors that blend in too much. - Avoid Shiny Fabrics:
Steer clear of shiny or reflective fabrics that can create glare under lights. - Proper Fit:
Ensure your clothes fit well and aren’t too tight or too loose, as this can be distracting and uncomfortable.
Audio Tips:
- Minimize Background Noise:
Choose a quiet location for recording. Close windows and doors to reduce outside noise. - Beware of HVAC Systems:
Turn off or minimize HVAC systems or fans that can create constant background noise. - Mute Notifications:
Turn off notifications on your computer and phone to avoid interruptions during the recording. - Reduce Echo:
Record in a room with soft furnishings like carpets, curtains, and cushions to reduce echo. You can also use sound-absorbing panels. - Beware of Rustling Clothes and Movements:
Avoid wearing clothing or jewelry that makes noise when you move, and try to stay as still as possible during the recording.
